Not All IT Innovations Are Equal: Evidence from Medical Device Patents
نویسندگان
چکیده
We develop a patent analysis approach to discover types of IT innovations and examine their technological and economic impacts. Our empirical investigation is based on 73,120 patents in the medical devices industry filed between 1996 and 2005. Rather than relying on pre-established classifications of IT innovations, we apply textual analysis to patent abstracts and map the extracted IT innovations into three types—generalpurpose IT, IT-embedded products, and IT-embedded processes. We analyze the technological impact (measured by 10-year forward citations) and economic impact (measured by patent maintenance fee payments) of IT innovations. We find that although all three types of IT innovations generate technological impact, generalpurpose IT innovations are more likely to generate economic value. These impacts of types of IT innovation are above and beyond the impacts of novelty and conventionality of the innovation and the disclosure strategy of information related to the innovation.

Darwinian Evolution of Culture as Reflected in Patent Records
We argue that culture undergoes an evolutionary process, analogous to biological evolution. As evidence, we analyze the bibliographic information of all utility patents issued in the United States from 1976 through 2007, which comprise over three million patents. The set of issued patents is regarded as an evolving population. A patent is considered to “reproduce” when it is cited by a new pate...
متن کاملA Qualitative Assessment of the Evidence Utilization for Health Policy-Making on the Basis of SUPPORT Tools in a Developing Country

These tools have been particularly recommended for developing countries. The present study tries to explain the process of evidence utilization for developing policy documents in the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME) and...
متن کاملProblems and Promises of Health Technologies: The Role of Early Health Economic Modeling
Background To assess whether early health economic modeling helps to distinguish those healthcare innovations that are potentially cost-effective from those that are not potentially cost-effective. We will also study what information is retrieved from the health economic models to inform further development, research and implementation decisions. Methods We performed s...
